What Layer8 Is

Layer8 is a Chrome extension that lets you draw on web pages. Your drawings are stored on our servers so other Layer8 users can see them when they visit the same page.

Data We Collect

Drawing data

When you draw on a page, we store the stroke data (coordinates, color, brush size) and the normalized URL of the page. We do not store screenshots, page content, or any information about the page itself beyond its URL.

Account data

If you sign in, we store your email address and a display name via our authentication provider (Clerk). You can use Layer8 without signing in — anonymous drawings are associated with a random device identifier stored locally in your browser.

Device identifier

A random UUID is generated on install and stored locally in your browser via chrome.storage.local. This lets us associate anonymous drawings with your browser session. It is never shared with third parties and can be reset by reinstalling the extension.

Data We Do NOT Collect

How We Use Your Data

We do not sell, share, or monetize your data in any way. We do not run ads. We do not use analytics or tracking scripts in the extension.

The Layer8 website (layer8.art) uses AWS CloudWatch RUM to monitor page performance and errors. This collects anonymized metrics (page load times, JS errors, HTTP request timings) and is limited to the marketing site only — it is not present in the extension.
